Most states will most likely use these words in describing the islander in conversation, having experienced firsthand what a former nation-turned-state is like. Hilariously outgoing to the point of annoyance, David doesn't care whether people hate him or not, he's just being himself. And if they don't like it, then they could just kiss his ass. As an optimist for life, he prefers being cheery and doesn't understand how anyone could be so darkly depressing for weeks at a time. His logic is, 'your life may have sucked, but think of the people whose worse off than you are.' Of course, being technically immortal, he does think about his logic twice occasionally.
With that in mind, David is determined to cheer everyone through any means necesary, even humilating himself just to get a laugh and a smile out of people. When asked why he does it for others that don't give two shits about him, he replies with a sad smile and shrugs. 'If I didn't do it, who would?" Because of this, no one truly understands how the islander's mind works unless they spend time with him. And even then, they probably still wouldn't understand him due to the shield he puts up when they prod too much.
With his home being surrounded entirely by water, he gets lonely occasionally. As a vivid dreamer, he spends his days looking out at the ocean, wanting to explore the world instead of being stuck on his island home. He's not lazy, he just really wants to experience new things, like backpacking around the world one day.
Interests
He has many. Has a pet budgie named, well Budgie. He can do hula but he gets embarrassed when his friends stop by the islands and ask him to dance for him. And because he loves to eat and cook, he is a chef under training, and hopes to be able to make people happy with his cooking skills someday.

Kingdom of Hawaii - (1778–1893)
Hawaii enjoyed being his own nation until the monarchy was overthrown in 1893 by Americans and European businessmen. He still seethes in quiet hatred over this.
Republic/Territory of Hawaii - (1894–1898), (1898–1959)
Hawaii was helpless and pretty much went along with America, still hurting over the fact that he was no longer a kingdom, but now a part of US. Some say this could be illegal adoption on America's part.
This is the time where Japan attacked Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1942. In return, he learned that America did care about him and defended him. This could possibly be a result in guilt for overthrowing the monarchy and asked Hawaii to become a state.
State of Hawaii - (1959–present)
America finally realized that he was not England, and that imperialism was not the way to go, thus asking him to be a state instead of a territory eased the guilt, but only slightly.

Due to the fact that Hawaii shudders at the thought of commitment, he does not have any 'love interests' as far as he knows. But he does like to flirt with women a lot and has a lot of friends if not enemies.

Mama and Papa Hawaii:
The ancients of the former island nation, they live on separate sides of the Big Island, mainly for the fact that togetherness just isn't their thing. But they will come together to guide their son through life, though their old fashioned ways greatly distanced David from them.
Even though he lives on another island, his occasionally visits his parents who live on Hawaii. And when by occasionally, meaning once every year for Christmas. Though they're indignant at their son for not visiting them more, they of course, they can't stop him from hopping on a plane to visit the mainland.
Axis Powers Hetalia
America: He and Hawaii had a somewhat distant relationship since the old days, but Hawaii slowly came to forgive him within time. America takes pride in Hawaii, putting him into the top five favorite states of his. He occasionally takes a vacation at his house when he needs to get away from it all.
Canada: He has a very close relationship with the nation, providing a close tropical vacation for him and giving tourist dollars. In return, Hawaii loves to visit Canada and hang out with him.
England: He taught Hawaii how to read and write in English, while introducing European culture to him. They had an excellent friendship, enough that England invited Hawaii into the European nation family. He occasionally still visits England in his home, enjoying having tea time with an old friend.
Japan: Friendship getting better since WWII. Japan and Hawaii get arkward when talking about WWII, so they don't bring it up, and instead talk about the
